Take this as the rumor that it is, but word is Neil Gaiman has been approached to write an episode for the 2010 "Doctor Who" season. If this is true, I assume we will be hearing a high-pitched squeal of fannish joy from now until the episode actually airs. Gaiman is more of a fantasy guy, but there's no doubt he could bring a unique flair to the good Doctor. I'd be interested to see what he would do with a free rein.
Gaiman is mostly known as a fiction writer, but he has some experience with the screen. He wrote "Mirrormask", the recent adaptation of "Beowulf" and the BBC mini-series "Neverwhere." His sole experience with episodic TV (according to IMDB at least) was an episode of "Babylon 5," but hey, it was a good episode.
